There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but Nature more,
From these our interviews, in which I steal
From all I may be, or have been before,
To mingle with the Universe, and feel
What I can ne'er express, yet cannot all conceal.

Uncle Nigel was never without a dog treat in his pocket. Growing up I was pretty scared of most of the dogs, cats, goats, (were there geese at one point)??! We weren’t allowed a goldfish (!), the the animal kingdom at the Cattlin’s was a different world. I definitely had a soft spot for Pattie and Holly, but I think Uncle Nigel was pretty surprised when I became a dog owner! Uncle Nigel was an animal whisperer, it was just part of who he was.
When I was younger I remember taking a magazine into school with some of his photos published in it, I thought it was so cool to have an Uncle as a photographer, I was very proud, he was essentially famous as far as I was concerned… I’m not sure he ever knew I did that.
As I got older I appreciated his incredibly dry sense of humour and ability to never take himself too seriously. Windsurfing with Auntie Lyn and Uncle Nigel was made more difficult because of the amount of laughter… which started in the changing rooms with me and Auntie Lyn trying to pull on wetsuits… and continued as we all spent more time in the water than on the board.
Can’t quite believe he’s gone.
So grateful that all the family had a chance to be together in June, it’s a time we’ll look back on with extra fondness now.
Imagine you’re being licked to pieces by all your doggies up in heaven now, while keeping a watchful eye on Lyn, the kids and grandkids, never far away.
Until we meet again, with love
